According to a DW Documentary, Tomatoes are a poker chip in global trade policies. Subsidized tomato products from the EU, China and elsewhere are sold at dumping prices, destroying markets and livelihoods in Africa.

The flood of cheap imports from China, the US and the EU has driven Ghana’s and other African tomato farmers to ruin. Desperate farmers find themselves having to seek work elsewhere, including in Europe, growing the very tomatoes that are canned and shipped to Africa at very cheap prices, thereby destroying the local tomato industry, ultimately rendering African farmers poor.

As Southern Cameroons fights to actualize its independence, what policies are needed to ensure that tomato farmers in Southern Cameroons are not driven out of the market? What can Southern Cameroon farmers in particular, and Southern Cameroonians in general learn from this documentary? Seasoned professionals will analyze these problems and challenges and offer direction and practical suggestions for Southern Cameroonian farmers.
